Image: Cahokia Rattlesnake Causeway and Mound HRoe 2018
Description: The ceremonial ‘axis’ road dubbed the Rattlesnake Causeway was an elevated embankment about 18 meters wide, 2 meters in depth at points, and nearly a kilometer long that stretched from Cahokia’s Grand Plaza south through the center of the city to the ridgetop Rattlesnake Mound. It is aligned 5 degrees east of north, and forms the central “axis” of Cahokia; constructed early in the sites history and around which the community seems to have been built. Digital illustration.
