Description: The vertical central shaft of the CPRR "Summit Tunnel" (Tunnel #6) at Donner Summit which allowed drilling and excavation of the tunnel to be carried out on four faces at once during construction of the 1,659 foot tunnel over a period of 15 months in 1866-67.
