Description: Dead Fraser fir - Abies fraseri trees, killed by the Balsam Wooly Adelgid, on the Camp Alice/Old Mitchell trails at Mount Mitchell State Park, North Carolina. Some healthy Fraser firs survive in the background, and a few cultivars have been found to be resistant to the Balsam Wooly Adelgid in the unique Southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest ecoregion habitat. New, young firs often sprout prolifically under the Blackberry vines that grow in these newly-created open areas, lending hope to a new, healthier generation of Firs. Taken during the Summer of 2003.
