It is said that Queen Elizabeth I saw the tree in foregate when she processed through the city on a visit in 1575 and asked that the pear be added to the city's coat of arms. "Civitas in Bello in Pace Fidelis" (The city faithful in war and in peace) Worcester remained loyal to King Charles and Prince Charles during the Civil War.
