Description: Big bluestem is a dominant native grass in tallgrass prairie and is found in mixed grass prairies where extra water is available. It is a warm season grass and grows best when temperatures exceed 80 degrees fahrenheit. It is very palatable to livestock and many species of wildlife. Big bluestem is used extensively in prairie reconstruction projects in the tallgrass prairie. A true "icon" of the prairie.
