Description: Tennessee Historical Commission marker in Athens, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. The marker recalls the "Battle of Athens," which occurred on August 2, 1946, when local officials locked themselves in the old jail (formerly off-camera to the right), allegedly to fix election results. An armed group of World War II veterans and supporters assembled on the hill to the left and exchanged fire with the authorities in the jail.
