Image: Barge blocks
Description: The barge blocks at Cooks yard on the River Blackwater in Maldon, England. These blocks are under water at high tide, allowing a barge to be floated onto them. They dry out at low tide to allow access to the flat bottoms of Thames sailing barges for scraping off barnacles and weed and applying antifouling. They also allow limited repair work to be done between tides. They are the last original barge blocks left on the east coast of England [1]. Photo by Will Kemp. Date 16th December 2008
