Description: Avicennia marina, commonly known as grey mangrove, is distributed along Africa's east coast, south-west, south and south-east Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In Bramble Bay it is the commonest and dominant element of most mangrove communities. Avicennia marina is usually a gnarled tree with distinctive peg like pnuematophores emerging from its underground roots. It is very adaptable and is a pioneer species following disturbances in the mangrove communities.
