Description: Bombing up a Royal Navy Grumman Avenger Mk.II aircraft of 832 or 845 Naval Air Squadron on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious (87) sailing in the Indian Ocean in readiness for the raid on Soerabaya, Java, in May 1944. The air strike against the Japanese held naval base was carried out by British, American, Australian, French and Dutch units. Several of the armourers are stood inside the aircraft's open bomb bay.
