Image: Augustus Saint-Gaudens, The Angel of Purity (Maria Mitchell Memorial) (1902)
Description: A monument in remembrance of Maria Gouverneur Mitchell (died 1898 aged 22 years), commissioned by her parents Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell and Mary Cadwalader Mitchell for St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, where their daughter taught children's classes. Saint-Gaudens based the sculpture on an earlier bronze figure, Amor Caritas, which he had created for the Musée d'Orsay, Paris; another version of this is in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The features of the angel were modelled after those of his mistress, Davida Clark.
