Description: Army Post Office in the Midlands, England, 1944 Staff at the Army Post Office 'somewhere in the Midlands' work on the card index of two million casualties that is maintained there. This index enabled letters for prisoners to be sent to the Red Cross for delivery, and enabled letters for wounded service personnel to be sent to the correct hospital. It also meant that the next-of-kin of the dead could have their letters returned to them after they had received their official War Office notification. In the background, more staff can be seen sorting mail.
