Description: Photo taken in Dublin on Armistice Day, 89 years ago today. This huge crowd was gathered in College Green for the unveiling of a Celtic Cross in memory of the 16th Irish Division. The Irish Times estimated that 50,000 people were present at this ceremony. The Celtic Cross was temporarily erected in College Green for later transport to Guillemont, France, to stand as a permanent memorial to the dead of the 16th Irish Division. On Wednesday, 12 November 1924, the Irish Times reported: "There were hundreds of ex-service men, wearing their ribbons and medals, round the Celtic cross, in addition to those who took part in the official parades, and the display of Flanders poppies was not equalled by any city in the British Isles. It was a wonderful and heartening sight. After the Réveille had been sounded the National Anthem was sung publicly and lustily in the streets of Dublin for the first time for many years. ... It was stated last night that nearly 500,000 poppies had been sold in Dublin and district."
