Description: AWM Caption: New Britain. 15 December 1943. US troops disembark from landing barges in the early hours of the morning, in one of the most daring assaults yet undertaken in the Pacific, on the southern coast near Arawe. Japanese defenders were completely routed and the entire Arawe Peninsula and two nearby islands were seized and completely captured within three hours. Allied casualties were extremely light despite dive-bombing attacks by the enemy against our landing craft. The Allied assault punched a 200-mile bulge in the offensive arc under the command of General MacArthur.
