Description: Portrait of Aizawa Seishisai, (from the Ibaraki Prefectural Museum of History). Aizawa (1782-1863) was a Japanese samurai and a Confucian of the Mito Domain in the late Edo period. He argued that Japan would cease to be Japan unless it was shown that it surpassed Western Europe in terms of thought.
