Description: Over the course of more than 20 years Rowlandson made numerous watercolours of Devon and Cornwall scenes while staying with his friend Matthew Mitchell near Bodmin. As with the artist’s depiction of ‘French prisoners under escort to Exeter Castle’, it is the figures that command the viewers’ attention rather than the
architecture of a precise location. Rowlandson is best known for humorous representations of daily life in the Georgian era.
