Description: Joseph Warren Revere was part of the United States military that invaded Alta California in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. In his 1849 book about his military stories and life in a Rancho, Revere includes illustrations. It is POSSIBLE that this illustration is a metaphor for the American annexation of Alta California (then Mexican territory), represented by a man about to stab a bear, though this is only an interpretation.
