Description: A Portland ram at Shipley, West Sussex, England. The Portland, named after the Isle of Portland in Dorset, is a rare breed, traditionally best bred on downlands. It is a sheep of good temperament, produces high quality meat, and wool for spinning. Ewes are notably good mothers and good milk producers, usually birthing one offspring, sometimes two, and of 38-40kg. An adult ram is typically of approximately 55kg. The horns of the ram are popular for making walking stick handles.
