Description: A Negro ChieftainLithograph print with colouring, published by S.W. Fores, 50 Piccadilly, December 26. Sir William Young of Delaford, 2nd Baronet (1749–1815) is the subject of this caricature. He was the MP for St Mawes in Cornwall between 1796 and 1804, and a leading opponent of Wilberforce’s motion against the slave trade. He was agent for the island of St Vincent from 1795 to 1802, secretary to the Association for Promoting Discovery of Interior Parts of Africa, and governor of Tobago from 1807 until his death in 1815. He had sizeable estates in the West Indies and was the owner of 1300 chattel slaves. His family’s wealth was based on the profits made by these slaves. His father, Sir William Young, 1st Baronet, had begun his career in Antigua, and had moved to the Windward Islands in the 1760s, where he founded estates on Dominica, St Vincent and Tobago. He was also governor of Dominica, and led the expedition against the Carib population of St Vincent in 1773. Below the image is the caption 'Folios of Caracatures lent out for the Evening'.
