Description: St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Germantown, at 6671 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA. Part of the Colonial Germantown Historic District, a National Historic Landmark Historic District. This church was built in 1896-97 and the parsonage (to the right) in 1855, but there seem to have been churches on this lot going back to the 1730s. The Lutheran church in Germantown has a history that goes back to at least 1728, when the "first pastor" died and was buried here. Lutheran services in Germantown may go back to 1698 when German immigrants apparently followed Lutheran ritual if not Lutheran theology (there was a mix of independent Quaker-Mennonites, pietists and mystics). Henry Melchior Muhlenberg - the "first Lutheran pastor in America" preached here starting in 1743, soon after his arrival in America, but only on weekdays as he was busy with his 3 official churches.
