Description: Built in the early 1960s for the electrification of the Great Eastern Main Line. They were more or less dedicated to services to Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze usually spiting at Thorpe-le-Soken. Originally constructed with distinctive wrap round windows, they were the first EMUs to have a speed of 100mph. They were replaced on the Clacton route in 1994 with less elegant class 321s and some found their way to the North West of England to work services by train operator North Western Trains. They have now all been withdrawn. Seen at London Liverpool Street on 21 March 1981 is unit 309.625 leading the usual 10 car set comprised of 2 x 4 cars (one set with a buffet car) and 1 x 2 car.
