Image: 2-Mortars-Ft-Wright
Description: This photo was taken (probably about 1915) by Adelard T. LeGere, Post Photographer for Fort H.G. Wright, on Fishers Island, NY, across Long Island Sound from Groton, CT. It shows a two-mortar pit at Battery Clinton. The perspective of the photo emphasizes the depth of the pits and the angle to which the mortars had to be elevated (over 45 degrees) in order to fire over the pit wall. Note the open space between the two mortar circles, characteristic of later, post-Abbot Quad mortar installations. The photo is from the collection of Matt Edwards, and was made available on the web by the Coast Defense Study Group, through its Forums.
