Image: 1944 Base End Station
Description: This photo, taken in 2010, looks west towards base end/spotting station B 1/4 S 1/4 which served the 6-inch guns of Fort Andrews'Battery McCook. Inside, the structure was 11 feet square, with a height of about 7 feet (from a platform floor that was elevated about three feet above ground level). The station was newly constructed in 1944, and was located about 50 ft. southeasterly of the old double base end station for mortar batteries Whitman and Cushing, which was built in 1907. These structures were located almost at the peak of the high hill about 700 ft. southwest of the fort's parade ground, at an elevation of 120-125 ft. Up through WW2, this hill, now heavily overgrown with trees and brush, was kept completely bare by periodic brush burning, giving these stations a clear view of surrounding waters.
