Gag Rule facts for kids
In United States history, a Gag Rule was a rule in effect from 1835 to 1844 in the United States House of Representatives that prevented petitions for the abolition of slavery from being discussed. Under the rule, all such petitions were automatically "tabled" (not read or discussed). Representative (and former President) John Quincy Adams was famous for his opposition to Gag Rules.
