Columbia is an incorporated small town on the James River in Brown County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 160 at the 2020 census. There is a large granary co-op at Columbia, also a post office, a bank, a bar, a church, a town park, and a community center, in addition to the city hall; and many homes.

History

An early variant name was Allentown. The city derives its present name from the song "Hail, Columbia".

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.52 square miles (3.94 km2), all land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 136 people, 70 households, and 39 families residing in the city. The population density was 89.5 inhabitants per square mile (34.6/km2). There were 80 housing units at an average density of 52.6 per square mile (20.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.5% White, 0.7% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.

There were 70 households, of which 17.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.3% were non-families. 40.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.94 and the average family size was 2.59.

The median age in the city was 51 years. 15.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22% were from 25 to 44; 33.9% were from 45 to 64; and 24.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.5% male and 48.5% female.
