Avalon Park, Chicago facts for kids
Avalon Park is an area on the south side of the U.S. city of Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the city's 77 official community areas and a park. Boundaries are 76th St. to the north, South Chicago Ave. to the east and 87th St. to the south.
Avalon Park had a major demographic change in the 1960s. In the 1960 census, Avalon Park was 0% African American (only six of 12,710 residents). A decade later, Avalon Park was 83% African American, according to the 1970 census.
A sewer system was created in 1910. It helped to drain the area and make further development easier.
