If the prefecture (capital) of the department is in an arrondissement, that prefecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a prefecture and as a subprefecture.

History

Since its creation, the Haute-Saône department has had few changes:

  • 1790 : creation of the department with six districts: Jussey, Luxeuil, Lure, Vesoul, Gray and Champlitte with the capital in Gray alternating with Vesoul.
  • 1794 : only Gray remained as the capital of the department.
  • 1800 : creation of the arrondissements: Vesoul, Gray and Lure; the capital was moved from Gray to Vesoul.
  • 1926 : the arrondissement of Gray was eliminated.
