The arrondissement of Roanne is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Loire département, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its capital, and a subprefecture of the department, is the city of Roanne.

History

When the Loire department was created in 1793, the arrondissement of Roanne was part of that original department.

Geography

The arrondissement of Roanne is bordered to the north by the Saône-et-Loire department, to the east by the Rhône department, to the south by the arrondissement of Montbrison, to the southwest by the Puy-de-Dôme department, and to the west by the Allier department.

It is the most northern arrondissement of the department; it has an area of 1,779.9 km2 (687.2 sq mi), and a population of 157,268 inhabitants with a density of 88.4 inhabitants/km².
